What Is Star Flyer’s Baggage Allowance?

Star Flyer’s baggage allowance depends on whether you’re flying domestically within Japan or internationally to Taipei. Domestic passengers get 2 free checked pieces up to 23 kg each, while international passengers get a single 30 kg free allowance with no piece limit. Carry-on is limited to 1 personal item under 10 kg on both networks.

What Is Star Flyer’s Domestic Baggage Allowance?

On domestic Japan routes, Star Flyer allows two checked pieces of up to 23 kg each, provided the combined length, width, and height of each piece doesn’t exceed 158 cm. Baggage must be dropped off at least 20 minutes before departure (30 minutes at Haneda Airport).

If a single piece runs from 23 kg up to 32 kg, Star Flyer charges JPY 1,100. Between 32 kg and 45 kg, the fee jumps to JPY 5,500. A third piece, or anything sized between 158 cm and 292 cm, also incurs a flat JPY 5,500 fee per item. Anything over 45 kg or 292 cm in total dimensions won’t be accepted at all, and items exceeding 203 cm or 32 kg per piece require advance approval from the SF Call Center.

Example: A traveler checking one 25 kg suitcase and one 18 kg duffel pays just JPY 1,100  for the 2 kg over the 23 kg limit on the first bag. The second bag, being under 23 kg, incurs no charge.

What Is Star Flyer’s International Baggage Allowance?

International flights between Kitakyushu and Taipei (Taoyuan) offer a more generous 30 kg free checked allowance per passenger, with no cap on the number of pieces, as long as no single item exceeds 32 kg or 203 cm in total dimensions. Children not requiring their own seat get 10 kg free.

Excess baggage fees on international routes are charged per kilogram rather than per piece:

From Taipei (Taoyuan)

Strollers, infant carriers, and child seats don’t count toward the allowance and check in free on both domestic and international flights.

What Are Star Flyer’s Carry-On Baggage Rules?

Star Flyer permits one carry-on item per passenger, weighing no more than 10 kg, with combined dimensions under 115 cm (55 × 40 × 25 cm). Bags are measured with a sizing gauge at the security checkpoint, and oversized items must be checked at the counter instead.

A few packing tips to stay compliant:

  • Keep mobile batteries and power banks in your carry-on only  they cannot go in checked baggage.
  • Avoid overhead storage for battery packs; keep them within reach, such as in the seat pocket.
  • Don’t attempt to charge devices from onboard power outlets using detachable batteries.

How Does Star Flyer Handle Musical Instruments and Bulky Items?

Instruments with cases measuring under 115 cm total  violins, violas, clarinets, flutes, and ukuleles  can travel as carry-on in the overhead bin. Larger instruments like guitars, basses, trombones, and double basses must be checked in, or a passenger can buy an extra seat via the Cabin Baggage Fee to keep the instrument with them.

As of January 31, 2026, Star Flyer is discontinuing dedicated shipping containers for checked instruments, meaning musicians must now pack and protect their own instrument cases before check-in. This is a meaningful update that most third-party travel guides have not yet covered.

What Items Are Restricted or Prohibited on Star Flyer Flights?

Star Flyer prohibits explosives, fireworks, paints, non-rechargeable oil-tank lighters, and instant cold packs from both carry-on and checked baggage. Lithium battery devices face specific wattage limits, and select agricultural products from Okinawa cannot be transported to mainland Japan.

Lithium-ion batteries rated over 300Wh cannot be carried on or checked at all, and hoverboards, e-skateboards, and similar self-balancing devices are banned outright for safety reasons. Satsuma sweet potatoes, Japanese morning glory, and uninspected citrus seedlings from Okinawa are also barred under Japan’s Plant Quarantine regulations.

What Is Star Flyer’s Pet Policy?

Star Flyer accepts small dogs, cats, and small birds as checked cargo on domestic flights for JPY 6,600 per cage, or in the cabin for JPY 50,000 per pet on a one-way domestic trip. International flights to Taipei do not accept pets at all, except documented guide dogs for passengers with disabilities.

Certain brachycephalic (flat-faced) dog breeds  including bulldogs, French bulldogs, boxers, Shih Tzus, and pugs  are not accepted as checked cargo between May 1 and October 31 due to heat sensitivity. Passengers must submit a signed consent form and arrive at least 30 minutes before departure.
