1. Carry-On Baggage Policy

Asiana allows passengers to bring cabin baggage on board, but strict size and weight limits apply to ensure everything fits in the overhead bins.

Standard Carry-On Limits

  • Weight Limit: 10kg (22lbs) per bag.
  • Size Limit: Maximum dimensions of 55 x 40 x 20 cm (including handles and wheels). The sum of the three dimensions must not exceed 115 cm.

Personal Item

In addition to your standard carry-on, you may bring one personal item free of charge. This item must fit under the seat in front of you.

  • Allowed Items: Handbag, laptop bag, briefcase, small backpack.
  • Size Limit: Maximum dimensions of 40 x 30 x 20 cm.

Important Notes

  • Business Class Bonus: Business Class passengers are allowed two standard carry-on bags (10kg each), plus a personal item.
  • Strict Enforcement: If your bag exceeds these limits at the gate, it will be checked, and you may be charged an excess baggage fee.
  • Restricted Items: Powders (over 350ml on US flights), liquids over 100ml, and sharp objects must be packed in checked luggage.

2. Checked Baggage Allowance

Your free checked baggage allowance depends heavily on your route and travel class. Asiana separates its policy into U.S. Routes (flights to/from/via the USA) and Non-U.S. Routes.

U.S. Routes (Americas)

This policy applies if your itinerary involves a flight to or from the United States (including territories like Saipan).

  • Economy Class: 2 bags, up to 23kg (50lbs) each.
  • Business Class: 2 bags, up to 32kg (70lbs) each.
  • Maximum Size: The sum of length + width + height must not exceed 158 cm (62 inches).

Non-U.S. Routes (Europe, Asia, Oceania)

If you are flying routes like London to Seoul, or Sydney to Incheon, the allowance is slightly different for Economy passengers.

  • Economy Class: 1 bag, up to 23kg (50lbs).
  • Business Class: 2 bags, up to 32kg (70lbs) each.
  • Maximum Size: 158 cm (62 inches).

Domestic Flights (Within Korea)

Unlike international routes which use a “piece concept” (number of bags), domestic flights use a “weight concept.”

  • Economy: Total weight of 20kg (44lbs). You can bring multiple bags as long as the total weight stays under this limit.
  • Business: Total weight of 30kg (66lbs).

3. Excess Baggage Fees (Updated 2025-2026)

Asiana Airlines increased excess baggage fees effective January 2025. If you plan to bring more than your free allowance, be prepared for these costs.

Overweight Fees

If your bag is within the size limit but heavier than allowed:

  • U.S. Routes:
    • 24kg – 32kg: $100 USD (KRW 100,000)
    • 33kg – 45kg: $400 USD (KRW 400,000) – Advance notice required.
  • Non-U.S. Routes:
    • 24kg – 28kg: $35 – $90 USD (depending on route distance).
    • 29kg – 32kg: $50 – $110 USD.

Oversize Fees

If your bag dimensions (L+W+H) are between 159cm and 203cm:

  • U.S. Routes: $200 USD.
  • Non-U.S. Routes: $90 – $210 USD (depending on distance).

Extra Piece Fees

If you want to check an additional bag beyond your free allowance:

  • U.S. Routes: $200 USD per bag.
  • Non-U.S. Routes: Ranges from $60 (Short-haul Asia) to $140 (Europe/Oceania).

Pro Tip: Pre-purchasing baggage allowance online or through the mobile app can sometimes secure a discount (up to 10%) compared to airport counter rates.

4. Exceptions and Special Items

Asiana Club Members

Elite status pays off. If you are an Asiana Club member, you get extra allowances:

  • Silver: 1 extra bag (Economy US routes: 23kg; Non-US: 10kg weight bonus).
  • Gold: 1 extra bag (Economy US routes: 9kg bag; Non-US: 20kg weight bonus).
  • Diamond/Platinum: 1 extra full-sized bag.

Infants and Children

  • Infants (under 2): Allowed 1 checked bag (23kg for US routes; 10kg for Non-US routes) PLUS one fully collapsible stroller, car seat, or bassinet.
  • Children: Same allowance as an adult, plus a stroller or car seat.

Musical Instruments

  • Small Instruments (Violin/Viola): Can be carried on if dimensions are under 115cm total.
  • Medium Instruments (Cello/Guitar): If they exceed carry-on limits but you don’t want to check them, you must purchase an extra seat (CBBG). The instrument + case cannot be higher than 155cm.
  • Large Instruments: Must be checked. If the sum of dimensions exceeds 203cm, you must contact Asiana in advance as it may be processed as cargo.

5. Tips to Avoid Extra Fees

Join Asiana Club

Even the base tier accumulates miles, but moving up to Silver quickly grants you extra baggage weight.

Weigh at Home

Fees for being just 1kg over can be steep (starting at $35-$100). Use a luggage scale before leaving home.

Use a “Wearable” Strategy

Heavy coats and boots should be worn on your body, not packed in your checked bag.

Check Partner Rules

If your flight is a codeshare (e.g., operated by United or Singapore Airlines but sold by Asiana), the baggage rules of the operating airline usually apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fee for a golf bag?

Asiana treats one golf bag + one general bag as one piece of luggage, provided the total weight is under 32kg (70lbs).

This is a generous policy compared to other airlines. However, if the combined weight exceeds 32kg, overweight fees apply.

Does a laptop bag count as a carry-on?

No, a laptop bag counts as your “personal item.” You can bring a carry-on suitcase (10kg) AND a laptop bag (must fit under the seat).

What if my bag is delayed?

Under new policies aligned with DOT regulations, if your bag is significantly delayed on a US route (more than 15 hours for flights <12hrs, or 30 hours for flights >12hrs) and you paid an excess baggage fee, you are entitled to a refund of that fee.
