Carry-On Baggage Rules: Don’t Get Caught at the Gate

Condor is very strict about cabin luggage. They distinguish between a “Small Bag” and “Carry-on Baggage.”

The Small Bag (Personal Item)

  • Who gets it: Everyone (All fares).
  • Size Limit: Max 40 x 30 x 10 cm (approx. 15.7 x 11.8 x 3.9 in).
  • Rules: Must fit under the seat in front of you. This is essentially a handbag, laptop bag, or very small backpack.

The Large Carry-On (Overhead Bin)

  • Who gets it: Economy Classic, Premium, and Business passengers. Economy Light passengers do NOT get this for free.
  • Size Limit: Max 55 x 40 x 20 cm (approx. 21.6 x 15.7 x 7.8 in).
  • Weight Limit:
    • Economy: Strictly 8 kg (17.6 lbs).
    • Premium Economy: 10 kg (22 lbs).
    • Business Class: 16 kg total (max 10 kg per single piece).

Warning for Economy Light Travelers: If you booked the cheapest fare (“Light”), you are only allowed the small personal item.

If you bring a standard carry-on suitcase to the gate without booking it in advance, you will be charged a gate fee between €75 and €100 ($90–$120).

Checked Baggage: The “Zone” System Explained

Condor determines your checked bag allowance based on “Zones.” While there are 7 zones, they generally fall into two categories: The Piece Concept (USA/Canada) and the Weight Concept (Most other destinations).

Flights to USA, Canada & Puerto Rico (Zone 5)

If you are flying to or from North America, the Piece Concept applies. This means you are limited by the number of bags, not just the total weight.

  • Economy Light: 0 bags included.
  • Economy Classic: 1 bag up to 23 kg (50 lbs).
  • Premium Economy: 1 bag up to 32 kg (70 lbs).
  • Business Class: 2 bags up to 32 kg (70 lbs) each.

Flights to Europe, Africa, Asia & Caribbean (Zones 1-4, 6-7)

For these destinations, the Weight Concept applies. You can bring as many bags as you want, provided the total weight does not exceed your limit.

  • Economy Light: 0 kg included.
  • Economy Classic: 20 kg (44 lbs) total.
  • Premium Economy: 25 kg (55 lbs) total.
  • Business Class: 30 kg (66 lbs) total.

Exception: Flights originating in Brazil usually have a generous allowance of 2 bags x 32 kg.

Baggage Fees: Excess, Overweight & Oversize

If your luggage exceeds the limits, Condor charges fees. These are significantly cheaper if you book them online (up to 8 hours before departure) rather than paying at the airport.

1. Excess Weight (Pre-Booked Packages)

You can buy extra weight packages online. Prices vary by flight duration, but estimated starting prices are:

  • +5 kg: From €20 – €50
  • +10 kg: From €40 – €85
  • +20 kg: From €70 – €150

2. Airport Excess Fees (If you pay at check-in)

If you wait until you arrive at the airport, you will pay per kilogram.

  • Zones 1, 2, 6: €15.00 per kg.
  • Zones 3, 4, 7: €20.00 per kg.
  • Zone 5 (USA/Canada): Fixed fee of €100 / $120 for an overweight bag (23-32kg) or €150 / $180 for an extra bag.

3. Oversize Baggage

If your bag exceeds total dimensions of 158 cm (Length + Width + Height), you will be charged an oversize surcharge.

  • Fee: €100 to €300 ($110 – $360) depending on the route.

Special Baggage Rules

Sports Equipment

Condor accepts sports equipment (golf clubs, bikes, surfboards), but it must be registered 8 hours before departure.

  • Cost: Fees range from €45 to €80 if booked early.
  • Business Class Perk: Business Class passengers often get one piece of sports equipment free (excluding Zone 5/USA).

Infants and Children

  • Strollers & Car Seats: You can transport two items (e.g., a buggy and a car seat) free of charge for children in the cargo hold.
  • Cabin Bags: Infants under 2 years old generally do not have a carry-on allowance, but you may carry a diaper bag/baby food as a specific exception or strictly within your own allowance.

5 Money-Saving Tips for Condor Passengers

Weigh Your Bag at Home

Condor is known to weigh carry-on bags at the check-in desk and sometimes at the gate. If your bag is 9kg instead of 8kg, you could face a hefty fee.

Pre-book Online

You can save up to 50% on excess baggage fees by booking packages online via “My Booking” rather than paying at the airport.

Use the “Weight Concept” to your Advantage

If you are flying to Zone 1-4 (not USA), you can split your 20kg allowance across two smaller suitcases if that is easier for packing.

Pool Your Baggage

If you are traveling with family on the same booking number, you can usually pool your weight allowance (e.g., two people in Economy Classic to Spain have a combined 40kg).

Watch the “Light” Fare

The Economy Light fare looks cheap, but adding a carry-on and a checked bag later often costs more than just booking Economy Classic in the first place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Condor with carry-on weight?

Very strict. Unlike some US carriers that rarely weigh cabin bags, Condor staff frequently weigh carry-ons at check-in and occasionally at the boarding gate. Stick to the 8kg limit.

Can I combine my baggage allowance with my partner?

Yes, as long as you are on the same booking reference number and checking in together. This applies to checked baggage weight, not the number of carry-on items.

What happens if my carry-on is too heavy at the gate?

You will be charged a gate-check fee. For flights to the US (Zone 5), this is around $120 / €100. For European flights, it is around €75.

Final Thoughts

If you are flying Economy Light, assume you have no baggage allowance other than a handbag.

If you need more, upgrade to Classic or pre-book your bags online immediately after buying your ticket.
