Aeromexico Baggage Policy

Aeromexico Baggage Policy 2026 – Fees, Weights & Tips to Save

Heading to Mexico or flying internationally with Aeromexico? Before you start packing, you need to know the rules.

Airline baggage policies are notorious for changing when you least expect them. Aeromexico is no exception, having recently updated its pricing structure for 2025 and 2026 on select routes. Getting it wrong can result in steep fees at the check-in counter, money better spent on tacos and tequila.

Aeromexico Baggage Policy: At a Glance

If you are in a rush, here is the quick summary of what you are allowed to bring.

Note: Clase Premier passengers get a higher combined carry-on weight limit of 18kg (39 lbs).

1. Carry-On Baggage Rules

Aeromexico is relatively generous with carry-on allowances compared to some low-cost carriers, but it is strict about weight.

The “Standard” Allowance

For almost every ticket (including Basic Fare), you are allowed:

  • 1 Personal Item: This must fit under the seat in front of you. Examples include a handbag, a laptop bag, or a small backpack.
  • 1 Carry-On Suitcase: This goes in the overhead bin.

The Weight Limit Trap

This is where travelers get caught. The weight limit is combined.

  • Economy (Basic, Classic, AM Plus): Your carry-on suitcase + your personal item must not exceed 10 kg (22 lbs) total.
  • Clase Premier: Your carry-on suitcase + your personal item must not exceed 18 kg (39 lbs) total.

Pro Tip: If your laptop is heavy, putting it in your carry-on might push you over the 10kg limit. Aeromexico staff frequently weigh carry-on bags at the gate, especially on full flights.

2. Checked Baggage Allowance

Your checked bag allowance depends entirely on your fare class and your route.

Domestic Flights (Within Mexico)

  • Basic Fare: 0 bags included (Fee applies).
  • Classic Fare: 1 bag included (max 25 kg / 55 lbs).
  • AM Plus: 1 bag included (max 25 kg / 55 lbs).
  • Clase Premier: 2 bags included (max 32 kg / 70 lbs each).

International Flights (USA, Canada, Central/South America)

  • Basic Fare: 0 bags included.
  • Classic & AM Plus: 1 bag included (max 23 kg / 50 lbs).
  • Clase Premier: 2 bags included (max 32 kg / 70 lbs each).

International Flights (Europe & Asia)

  • Classic & AM Plus: 1 bag included (max 23 kg / 50 lbs).
  • Clase Premier: 2 bags (Europe) or 3 bags (Asia) included (max 32 kg / 70 lbs each).

3. Excess Baggage Fees (2026 Rates)

If you bring more than your ticket allows, or your bag is heavy, prepare to pay. Aeromexico uses a High Season vs. Low Season pricing model.

Extra Bag Fees

Prices are estimates based on standard USD/MXN exchange rates and subject to tax.

Route1st Extra Bag (Low Season)1st Extra Bag (High Season)
Within Mexico~$30 USD (600 MXN)~$45 USD (800 MXN)
US & Canada$30 – $40 USD$35 – $45 USD
Europe$60 USD$65 USD
South America$40 – $60 USD$45 – $70 USD

Overweight & Oversized Fees

These fees apply on top of any standard baggage fee.

  • Overweight (23kg to 32kg): Approx. $100 USD (international) or 700 MXN (domestic).
  • Oversize (Max 158cm to 204cm): Approx. $150–$250 USD depending on the route.

Warning: Bags weighing more than 32 kg (70 lbs) or measuring more than 204 cm (80 inches) will generally not be accepted as checked luggage and must be shipped as cargo.

4. Special Baggage: Sports & Instruments

Flying with a surfboard, bike, or guitar? Aeromexico classifies these as “Special Baggage.”

Musical Instruments

  • Small Instruments: Can be brought on board as your carry-on item if they fit in the overhead bin or under the seat (max 115 cm linear).
  • Large Instruments (Cellos/Guitars): Must be checked.
  • Fee: ~$75 USD (Domestic) / ~$150 USD (International).

Sports Equipment

This includes bikes, surfboards, golf clubs, and ski equipment.

  • Fee: ~$75 USD (Domestic) / ~$150 USD (International).
  • Packing: Items must be in a rigid, protective case. Pedals on bikes must be removed, and handlebars turned sideways.

Exception: Some “Classic” and “Premier” fares may allow you to swap a regular checked bag for a piece of sports equipment for free, but this is route-dependent. Always call ahead to confirm.

5. Exceptions and Freebies

You might be able to skip the fees if you fall into one of these categories:

Club Premier Members

Titanium, Platinum, and Gold members generally get one extra checked bag free of charge on top of their fare allowance.

SkyTeam Elite

Elite and Elite Plus members from partner airlines (like Delta or Air France) receive one extra bag (up to 23kg).

Aeromexico Visa Cardholders

Specific Santander or American Express Aeromexico cardholders may be entitled to free baggage.

Infants

  • Lap Infant: 1 piece of checked luggage (max 23 kg) + 1 stroller/bassinet is often included free on international routes.
  • Strollers: One stroller can usually be checked at the gate free of charge for any child ticket.

Tips to Avoid Fees on Aeromexico

Weigh Before You Go

Since the carry-on limit is a combined 10kg, it is very easy to exceed. Buy a portable luggage scale.

Pre-Pay Online

While the April 2025 update standardized some pricing, paying for bags via the Aeromexico app or website 24 hours before your flight is still generally cheaper (and safer) than paying at the airport counter.

Join the Club

Even the base level of Club Premier (now Aeromexico Rewards) can offer perks.

Wear Your Heaviest Clothes

If your carry-on is 11kg, put on your coat and heavy boots to get it down to 9.9kg.

Check Partner Rules

If you booked your Aeromexico flight through Delta or another SkyTeam partner, the baggage rules of the marketing carrier (the airline listed first on your ticket) usually apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pool my baggage allowance with my family?

Generally, no. Baggage allowance is individual. However, if you are checking in together at the same counter, agents are sometimes lenient if one bag is 24kg and another is 20kg, but don’t rely on it.

What is the fee for a dog in the cabin?

For 2025/2026, the fee for a pet in the cabin is approximately $135–$175 USD depending on the destination. The combined weight of the pet and carrier must not exceed 9 kg (20 lbs).

Does the Basic Fare really have NO checked bags?

Correct. If you book the cheapest “Basic” fare to the US or Europe, you have 0 checked bags. You will have to pay roughly $60–$75 USD each way to add one later.

What happens if my carry-on is 1kg overweight?

Strictly speaking, you will be forced to check it and pay the gate-check fee. While some agents are nice, Aeromexico is stricter than US airlines regarding carry-on weight.

Final thought

By sticking to the 10kg limit for the cabin and pre-booking any checked luggage online, you can breeze through Benito Juárez International Airport without opening your wallet.

Ready to fly? Double-check your specific allowance by logging into “Manage Your Trip” on the Aeromexico website before you head to the airport.
